Newark's Performing Arts Powerhouse
NJPAC (New Jersey Performing Arts Center) sits at 1 Center St in downtown Newark as the state's flagship performing arts venue. It's the kind of place that brings world-class talent right to our city - the kind of venue that makes you feel the heartbeat of Newark's cultural life every time you walk through its doors.
For decades, NJPAC has been the anchor of Newark's arts scene, hosting performances that span the full spectrum of the performing arts. Whether you're into classical music, contemporary dance, theatrical productions, or jazz, there's something here that speaks to you. It's not just a building - it's a space where artists and audiences connect, where creativity happens, and where Newark shows the world what we're made of.
Home of the NJ Symphony
One of NJPAC's most significant roles is serving as home to the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Having a world-class orchestra based right here in Newark means we get consistent access to symphonic performances without having to travel. The NJ Symphony performs across multiple seasons, bringing everything from classical masterworks to contemporary compositions to our community.
The orchestra's presence at NJPAC elevates the entire cultural ecosystem of Newark. It means mentorship opportunities for young musicians, educational programming in schools, and performances that draw people from across the region to experience live symphonic music at the highest level.
Jazz and Beyond: The James Moody Festival
NJPAC honors Newark's deep jazz heritage through the James Moody Jazz Festival, a celebration of the legendary saxophonist who was born right here in our city. The festival keeps jazz alive and accessible, drawing musicians and fans who understand that Newark is jazz country. It's part of how the center stays connected to what makes this city special - its music, its history, and its artists.
Beyond the festival, NJPAC regularly features jazz performances and collaborations that reflect the sophistication and innovation of the genre. These aren't afterthought bookings - they're central to the venue's identity and mission.
Dance, Theater, and More
The performing arts go way beyond music at NJPAC. The center hosts contemporary and classical dance companies, theatrical productions that range from Broadway-style shows to experimental work, and performances that push boundaries and challenge audiences. This variety means there's always something new to discover, whether you're a longtime arts enthusiast or someone just starting to explore what's out there.
The venue's multiple theaters allow for different types of performances simultaneously, creating a dynamic cultural calendar that serves different tastes and interests across Newark and the region.
A Gathering Place for Our Community
NJPAC isn't just about the shows - it's about the experience of being part of something larger. Walking through the venue on a performance night, you see families, couples, students, and longtime patrons all gathered for something that matters. There's an energy that comes from live performance, from being in a room with other people experiencing art together.
The center's commitment to programming extends beyond the stage into educational initiatives, community engagement, and making performing arts accessible to people across New Jersey. It's about building audiences, developing artists, and strengthening the cultural fabric of our region.
